UK Mechanical Power Transmission Industry Statistics - 2008 Edition

The BGA works closely with HM Customs and Excise (HMCE), The Office for National Statistics (ONS), EUROTRANS and others to clarify issues relevant to Members and promote Members' interests.

This collaboration has resulted in a greater understanding of PRODCOM (production) and CN (trade) codes and related statistical data by all concerned and has improved the clarity and accuracy of official statistics and provided more meaningful data to BGA Members.

    Notes

  1. Estimated Figures are in red
  2. * Unallocated production: production of gears, transmissions, bearings and related components that cannot be allocated to a particular category for reasons of confidentiality.
  3. ** Combined data: While bearings and bearing housings are not normally included as part of the Mechanical Power Transmissions totals, the bearing housings figure is likely to include gearbox casings.
  4. Data are often adjusted retrospectively by ONS or HMCE.  All known adjustments are included in the data above.

UK Mechanical Power Transmissions Industry Statistics - Index

Trade and production statistics

Detailed trade and production statistics for the UK's non-automotive Mechanical Power Transmission industry are compiled annually by the BGA from:

  • 'Combined Nomenclature' (CN) trade data (imports and exports) collected by HM Customs and Excise.
  • 'Production in the Communities' (PRODCOM) production surveys carried out annually by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
  • brief summary of the data is provided here

The statistics are published by the BGA to show all available official data for the last three years against all relevant trade (CN) codes and descriptions and grouped under the headings :

  • Chains
  • Transmission elements
  • Bearings
  • Loose gears and other parts
  • Gearboxes for stationary equipment
  • Speed variators
  • Automotive gearboxes (for comparison)

Production (PRODCOM) codes are shown against their equivalent trade (CN) codes and summaries of the data are provided to show:

  • Net UK consumption for the last two years
  • Percentage year-on-year changes in production, imports, exports and home consumption since 1993

Note:

  1. Where PRODCOM data collected by the Office for National Statistics is 'suppressed' (usually for reasons of confidentiality) data has been estimated.
  2. Where data are revised historically by the ONS, these changes are reflected in the Trade and Production statistics
