The school is one of the premier engineering schools in the UK, combining expertise in mechanical, materials and manufacturing engineering with the impact of human factors and ergonomics on products and systems. We have an international reputation for the high quality of our research, teaching and graduates. The School was awarded a grade 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. We have some 50 academic staff which gives us a high level of expertise over an exceptionally broad range of subject areas and also in newer emerging topics which are frequently of an interdisciplinary nature. The Structural Integrity and Dynamics Group (one of the seven research groups within the school) work in a variety of areas related to the development and application of advanced methods in solid mechanics and dynamics. Activities cover a wide range, from fundamental research into the development of analytical and numerical techniques, to applied research into the study of specific engineering problems. In particular, the University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Transmissions Systems forms part of the Group and is a mutli-disciplinary group carrying out core research into advanced aeroengine transmissions systems.
