The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IMechE, represents over 77,000 professional mechanical engineers. The IMechE is a truly international organisation, with over 11,500 members living and working overseas, in 120 different countries. Covering all aspects of mechanical engineering, including automobile, aerospace and rail, IMechE encourages it’s members to become the best mechanical engineers they can, becoming Chartered or Incorporated Engineers, to show their professionalism to their colleagues, the wider engineering community and the public. IMechE also encourages businesses to excel, with the Manufacturing Excellence Awards benchmarking UK manufacturing companies in nine different areas of business practise, and rewarding the best at a prestigious awards ceremony. Through other activities, such as Formula Student – where university students are challenged to design, build and compete a single-seater racing car – and a comprehensive awards programme, young people are inspired to follow a career in mechanical engineering. The IMechE offers members many other services, such as seminars and events, and information and library service as well as numerous networking opportunities throughout the year. It also campaigns on a political level and optimises the amount of press coverage it receives. The IMechE communicates with it’s members regularly. Members under 30 receive MECHS and e-mechs several times a year, updating them on relevant news and activities as well as industry information. Other members receive agenda eight times a year which contains information about news and events members may be interested in.
