Codes of Practice
The Codes of Practice cover the specification and measurement of gears and are designed to improve day-to-day working practices. They embody the best features of well established practical procedures and encourage the adoption of better working practices.
The Codes should also help to standardise the terminology used, methods of presentation of gear data and measurement results and should reduce misunderstandings between customer and supplier - leading to the production of better gears.
The Codes of Practice were produced by the Design Unit, University of Newcastle upon Tyne {95} in collaboration with the organisations named below. The initial work was sponsored by the DTI as part of a research project entitled 'Improving the Accuracy of Gear Measurement in Industry'.

Gear Technology Manual
Based on the highly successful 3 volume Teaching Pack, the Gear Technology Manual has been sponsored by the British Gear Association to provide a wider understanding of gearing and to help compensate for a lack of modern English-Language books on gearing design.
The six modules comprise a total of more than 350 pages of text, notes and diagrams and cover:
Drive Systems
Gear System Design
Gear Geometry
Design and Stress Analysis of Spur and Helical Gears
Gearbox Design
Manufacture and Metrology of Spur and Helical Gears
Three UK gearing design experts, with experience both of industrial consultancy and teaching, have each compiled two of the modules that make up the Manual. They are:
Mr Dieter Hofmann - Gear Design Unit University of Newcastle
Dr Hellmuth Kohler of Sheffield University
Prof. Bob Munro at Huddersfield University
