The BMPTA is active on BSI committees concerned with formulating gear design and manufacturing standards. BMPTA Members have chaired the BSI MCE/5 Standards Committee which has overall responsibility for some twenty BSI standards and which also liaises with the BSI MTE/16 Committee for gear-forming tools.
Mr Alan Thompson of Gear Technology Ltd chairs the MCE/5 Committees which shadows the activities of the ISO TC 60 (Gears) working groups. The committee members, see below, also represent the interests of the UK gear industry at the ISO meetings and can thus influence the formulation of future international standards relating to gears.

The Technical Committee award of a prize for the best degree final year project prize 2000 was to Jake Sisson, Allen Gears, for his project report "Evaluation of Epicyclic Gearbox Efficiency" This prize is being supported by the IMechE.
The meetings are often rounded off by technical presentations and have included an overview of the STEP Programme AP226 by V Kozousek, Lloyd's Register of Shipping, the progress of ISO 3595 "Gears - Industrial Enclosed Gear Drives" and an overview of Cycloidal Gears, both by R Chester, SHI.
The Technical Committee and its immediate contacts have expertise in all aspects of gearing. The Technical and Training Committees have jointly run a series of Seminars, Workshops and On-site Visits in recent years to transfer this technology and experience.
These events are organised on a wide range of technical subjects - Table 2 gives some examples of the current titles - which are designed to help delegates from both Member and non-Member companies to keep abreast of the latest gearing technology. BMPTA Members enjoy discounted delegate attendance fees.
The programme of workshops and seminars are held in rotation on a cycle of about 18 months. Future events are listed below.

From its formation, the BMPTA supported the setting up of a Gear Research Centre at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and in 1988 this was designated a Centre of Excellence in Gear Technology.

By lobbying funding organisations - in particular the EPSRC, the BMPTA has been instrumental in encouraging more research in gearing at other universities, notably at Huddersfield and Cardiff, as well as Cambridge, Imperial college and Birmingham University.
The BMPTA commissioned a comprehensive world-wide literature survey of gearing related research, which was published as the `State of the Art Survey'. Relevant data was extracted from this and data items prepared for BMPTA Members on gear design and manufacture and a gear research programme formulated to meet the needs of the UK gearing industry. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) supported this research and have provided generous funding.
On the 1st January 2000 the GRF was re organised as the BMPTA Research Committeewhich will benefit the Research and other BMPTA Committee work and reduce the costs of the research activities.
