Standards
British Standards Institution (BSI)
The BSI is now the world's leading standards and quality services organisation. Formed in 1901, it is the oldest national standards-making body in the world, is independent of government, industry and trade associations and operates in over 90 counties including the US, Pacific Rim and China.
International Standards Organisation Technical Committee 60 (ISO TC 60)
This ISO technical committee is concerned with standardisation in the field of gears, including terminology, nominal dimensions, tolerances, and tools for manufacturing and control.
American National Standards Institution (ANSI)
Founded by five engineering societies and three government agencies, ANSI has served in its capacity as administrator and co-ordinator of the United States private sector voluntary standardisation system for 80 years and continues to be supported by a diverse constituency of private and public sector organisations.
Professional Institutions
Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
Home of Mechanical Engineers for 150 years, the IMechE now has 82,000 world-wide engineer members and is the United Kingdom's qualifying body for mechanical engineers.
Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE)
The IEE represents the interests of over 140,000 electrical, electronic and manufacturing engineers world-wide. Key activities include publishing, conferences, maintenance of technical standards, liaison with government and the provision of scientific and technical information services.
Institute of Marine Engineers (IMarE)
Founded in 1889, the IMarE is a professional institution and learned society and is the largest in its field in the world. It is a respected authority throughout every maritime country with in excess of 16,000 members.
The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME)
Founded in 1897 to "advance science and technology, and thereby contribute to the development of industries" the JSME is Japan's leading engineering society with a membership of over 47,000.
Centre Technique des Industries Méchaniques (CETIM)
Founded in 1965, CETIM aims to develop research, improve productivity and guarantee quality in the mechanical engineering sector. It provides information on technological developments, R&D and standardisation work and seeks to broaden and defend the interests of the French mechanical engineering industry.
The Institution of Engineering Designers
The Institution of Engineering Designers, established in 1945, is a professional body for designers who operate in widely diverse fields of design practice. In addition, there are members who operate in fields such as consultative practice, management and education.
The
Forum for Applied Mechanics
The Forum for Applied Mechanics exists to promote interactions between all
organisations in the UK with an interest in applied mechanics both experimental
and theoretical.
