Last week, the British Gear Association (BGA) welcomed our Eurotrans partners to Newcastle University for the June 2026 Eurotrans Board meeting. This gathering brought together industry leaders from across Europe to discuss the current state and future of the Gear Transmission sector. The event combined technical tours, collaborative dinners, and focused board sessions, creating a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and building stronger connections.
Exploring Advanced Engineering at Newcastle University
The gathering began with a tour of BGA Member Design Unit's Advanced Engineering Research Hub. The Design Unit is renowned for its expertise in gear metrology, material testing, and test rig development. Delegates had the opportunity to see firsthand the cutting-edge facilities and research projects that support innovation in Power Transmission.
Building Relationships
On Thursday evening, delegates gathered at Black Friars for a dinner that fostered informal discussions and closer personal connections. This relaxed setting allowed participants to exchange ideas about the challenges and advances shaping the gear transmission industry in the UK and Europe.
Topics ranged from emerging technologies to workforce development. Many attendees shared concerns about recruitment and skills shortages, a recurring theme throughout converations. The dinner also provided a chance to discuss how different countries are addressing these issues, offering insights that could benefit the entire sector.

Focused Discussions at the Eurotrans Board Meeting
Friday morning started early at the Newcastle University Stephenson Building, where the Eurotrans Board conducted its official business. The agenda covered a wide range of topics, including economic trends, technological progress, and workforce challenges.
Representatives from the UK, France, Belgium, Norway, Italy, and Germany presented detailed reports on the economic state of the Gear Transmission Industry in their countries. These presentations revealed both common challenges and unique national circumstances. For instance, while some countries face supply chain disruptions, others are grappling with fluctuating demand or regulatory changes.
A significant part of the discussion centred on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry. Delegates explored how AI can improve design processes, predictive maintenance, and quality control. They also considered the potential impact of AI on employment, emphasising the need for upskilling workers to adapt to new technologies.
Recruitment and skills shortages remained a key concern. The board discussed strategies to attract new talent, including partnerships with universities, apprenticeships, and promoting careers in power transmission to younger generations. These efforts are essential to ensure the industry’s long-term growth and competitiveness.

Shared Goals for Industry Growth and Collaboration
The June 2026 Eurotrans Board meeting underscored the importance of collaboration across European borders. By sharing knowledge and experiences, Associations can better address common challenges.
The British Gear Association’s role as host reflected our commitment to strengthening ties with European colleagues and ensuring the UK voice is heard.
Collaborating with other Associations demonstrate the value of bringing together diverse perspectives to build a stronger, more resilient industry. The British Gear Association looks forward to continuing this work and supporting initiatives that benefit the entire European gear transmission community.
By working together, sharing expertise, and focusing on practical solutions, the industry can meet its challenges head-on and secure a prosperous future.
