At the British Gear Association, we take pride in setting the standard for Gear Training in the UK. Our dedication to ongoing education pushes us to routinely update and improve our Knowledge Transfer Training Programme.

This Autumn, we are thrilled to announce the addition of two brand new courses to our programme, and registration is open now.

All online training is completely free of charge to BGA Members and in-person training is at a reduced rate.

Surface Integrity Part 2

Date: 17th September 2025

Time: 09:30 - 16:30

Location: Design Unit - Newcastle upon Tyne

Tutor: Dr. Ronnie Rego - Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica - ITA

Fee: Non Member £450 / BGA Member £250

Please note this is an in-person course.

Surface Integrity Part 2 builds upon the concepts from the Virtual Surface Integrity Part 1 course. This session will begin with a quick review of essential concepts like surface integrity, topography, and residual stresses, all of which are crucial in gear production.

The course will then cover how different manufacturing processes directly impact surface integrity. Participants will look closely at various techniques, such as machining, heat treatment, and finishing processes. For instance, understanding how heat treatment can improve hardness and resistance to wear by 30% can be a game-changer for your gear applications.

The Seminar Programme will cover:

  • Quick review of Surface Integrity, Topography, and Residual Stresses.

  • Effects of Machining on Surface Integrity.

  • Influence of Heat Treatment on Surface Integrity.

  • Impact of Shot Peening on Surface Integrity.

  • Role of Grinding in Surface Integrity.

Engaging with the material hands-on, you will learn from one of the industry's leading experts, which can significantly enrich your professional skill set.

VIRTUAL DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE RATING PROCEDURES FOR PLASTIC GEARS

Date: 3rd & 4th December 2025

Time: 10:00 - 12:30

Platform: TEAMS

Tutor: Dr. Damijan Zorko and Dr. Borut Černe - RD Motion

Fee: Non Member £350* / BGA Member Free

Please note this course is held over 2 sessions. You must attend both to complete the training.

As high-performance plastic gears are increasingly utilized, their advantages over metal counterparts are hard to ignore. This course will explore the design and performance rating procedures tailored to plastic gears, emphasizing their roles in modern applications, such as automotive and aerospace industries.

During the training, you will learn about the benefits of plastic gears, like their lighter weight, which can reduce overall equipment weight by 50%, and the elimination of lubricant needs, thereby cutting maintenance costs significantly.

The Seminar Programme will address:

  • Key characteristics of high-performance plastic gears.

  • Core design principles for plastic gear systems.

  • Innovative methodologies for performance rating of plastic gears.

  • Real-world applications of plastic gears in machinery.

These two sessions will equip you with the tools to enhance your engineering expertise and adapt to the latest advancements in this critical area of gear technology.
