Feeding our Engineers of the future

On Friday 8th November we had the pleasure of sponsoring an event for 80 Year 4 MEng and MSc Engineering students from Newcastle University who are undertaking a course on Design of Mechanical Power Transmissions, led by Professor Brian Shaw and Design Unit colleagues. After a tour of the Design Unit research facilities at the new Advanced Engineering Research Hub, the British Gear Association organised a (soft) drinks and pizza reception, providing an opportunity for students to network with University staff and learn more about the British Gear Association and careers in gears.

The students visited several departments and talked to engineers about live projects and research at the University.

The tour gave insight into manufacturing methods, gear metrology, materials Characterisation and testing, Instrumentation and Control, and Component and Prototype testing. Good discussions were had about how gear research and developments by Universities and BGA Industry members will improve efficiency of transmissions, contributing towards Net Zero ambitions across many sectors.

Students also learnt about the joint BGA / IMechE annual student prize. The prize is considered one of the most prestigious Student prizes in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Next year will be the 25 year celebration! It’s very exciting.

The goal of the prize is to encourage and support the growth of the next generation of UK engineers.

The prize is awarded for the best Final Year Project on any topic broadly related to the field of mechanical power transmissions.

Benefits of entry:

· £600 prize

· Test your ideas

· Free entry to Gears 2025

· Chance to present your paper to industry experts

· Connect with top employers

· Prestige

· Boost your CV

Applications forms and submission questions can be sent to admin@bga.org.uk

NB. Please note that projects for HND/HNC, BEng/BSc, MEng or MSc will be accepted and the judges will apply suitable weightings to take account of the different qualification levels.

Overall, the day was a success.

Newcastle University, as members of the BGA benefit from a unique relationship with the BGA. Membership is open to other universities with engineering degree syllabus. The strong links with industry members helps students understand and prepare ready for gears related employment. Having gears trained graduates supports member organisations hiring graduates who are already gears trained, essentially a head start in their new roles!

If you are a University wanting to add value to your curriculum contact Kirsty and Lynne in the BGA Office admin@bga.org.uk to access free gears training as a BGA member.
