The BGA IMechE joint Student Prize 2025 winner is Daniel Hall from Newcastle University for his MEC8095 Final Project:

“A feasibility study into the modification of a power recirculating gear test rig, to allow investigation into the influence of reverse bending in gears."

The judging panel commented:

'The project proposes design changes to a power recirculating test rig to test the effect that reverse torque loads on gear bending fatigue strength. This is particular important to electric vehicle gearbox design where high reverse torque loads are common.'

'A wide range of analysis methods were confidently applied throughout the design process.'

'A well-presented report which was easy to read, with appropriate discussion and sensible literature review. Conclusions and decisions were backed by appropriate discussion.'

Daniel has been invited to present his paper the the leading gear experts in the UK at GEARS 2026 in November 2026.
