In 2024, the British Gear Association (BGA) were excited to fund a Research Project on “Non-Involute Gear Testing.” This initiative, launched by BGA member Dontyne Gears.
Objectives:
The work will confirm initial tests carried out by Dontyne Gears that this new profile enables considerable improvement in durability. The improvements could also be used to design lighter weight applications or extend service periods of especial interest in EV and Wind Turbine applications.
Anticipated outcomes:
It is expected that this work will confirm that the new profile enables at least 50% improvement in durability (load cycles at same torque) with no increase in manufacturing costs or re-tooling. Actual improvements seen so far have been well in excess of 100%.
Benefit to Members:
Written report on test results including background of technology and benefits. This will bring confidence to members involved in design and product development that this new technology does work, and software for design and analysis is a valid tool as well as confirming manufacturing processes and testing equipment are available for future test programs.
