Welcoming Darren Carter to the BGA Executive Council

The British Gear Association (BGA) are delighted to welcome of Darren Carter from Hewland Engineering to our Executive Council. With over 30 years of experience in the automotive sector, Darren brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership that promises to strengthen the BGA’s role in the industry. His extensive background in engineering, business development, and sales across various automotive companies positions him as a valuable asset to the Association.


About Darren Carter


Darren Carter began his career as a junior engineer at the General Motors Europe manufacturing plant in Luton. This early experience laid a solid foundation in vehicle engineering and manufacturing processes. Over the years, he expanded his expertise by taking on diverse roles at GM Europe and Millbrook Proving Ground, working in both engineering and commercial departments. This blend of technical and business experience has shaped his holistic understanding of the automotive industry.


In 2013, Darren joined Intertek, a UK FTSE100 company, to lead sales and marketing for its automotive division. During this time, he also served as Vice Chairperson for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Environmental Policy Committee. His role involved leading technical discussions and meetings with industry stakeholders and UK government departments, highlighting his ability to bridge industry needs with regulatory frameworks.


Later, Darren played a key role in establishing the UK business for UTAC CERAM, a French automotive testing company. His efforts contributed to the acquisition of Millbrook Proving Ground by UTAC in 2021, demonstrating his strategic influence in the automotive testing and development sector.


Currently, Darren serves as Business Development Director at Hewland Engineering, where he oversees worldwide sales of gear and transmission system design, testing, development, and manufacturing services. His leadership supports Hewland’s reputation as a specialist in high-performance automotive components.

The British Gear Association (BGA) is a trade association that promotes the technical and commercial interests of manufacturers, distributors, academics and others involved in the Power Transmissions industry in the United Kingdom.

 

The Association speaks with authority on behalf of the industry both nationally and internationally and its ability to help companies and individuals involved in the industry is widely recognised by government, the media and industry. The Association is well-represented on British and International Standard committees and provides the Chair of the British Standards Institution's MCE/5 Committee on Gearing.
