November at the BGA Gear Events, Training and Standards Sessions

2 min read

November brings a concentrated programme of technical learning, expert discussion and member-focused insight at the British Gear Association. Across the month, the BGA is hosting three events that reflect the breadth of modern power transmission work: our international online conference GEARS 2026, a specialist Plastic Gear course, and a focused session on Gear and Rolling Bearing Standards.

For anyone involved in design, manufacture, inspection, procurement, quality, compliance or technical decision-making, the schedule offers a practical way to keep pace with developments in gear technology. The topics also reflect where industry attention is moving: material choice, performance rating, sector-specific gearbox challenges, and the standards that shape safe and consistent engineering practice.

GEARS 2026 takes place online from 17 to 19 November

The month begins with GEARS 2026, the BGA’s renowned online conference, running from 17 to 19 November.

This annual event serves as the UK Centre of Technical Excellence for gear design, manufacture, and application technologies. As the premier conference for the Gear Industry in the UK. GEARS is considered an essential event for manufacturers, distributors, and academics involved in the gears sector.

The full online conference is free of charge for BGA Members, while day 1 is free of charge to everyone.

Design and Performance Rating Procedures for Plastic Gears

On 25 and 26 November, the BGA hosts its final course of 2026: Design and Performance Rating Procedures for Plastic Gears. The course will be presented by Damijan Zorko from RD Motion.

The course focuses on all aspects of the design process of gearboxes with plastic gears. The covered topics were selected based on what we experience during our work, working with our customers from automotive, micro-mobility (e-bikes), house appliances, aerospace, chemical, power tools and robotics sectors.

Focus Session on Gear and Rolling Bearing Standards

The BGA closes the month with a special Focus Session on Gear and Rolling Bearing Standards on 26 November.

Standards sit behind much of mechanical engineering practice, but their origins and development are not always visible to the people who use them day to day. In power transmission work, standards can influence design calculations, inspection requirements, terminology, material expectations, quality processes and compliance decisions.

This member-focused session asks a simple but important question: where do standards come from?

The session will explore:

  • What standards are, what they are not.

  • The relationship between British and ISO standards.

  • Different types of standards documents.

  • How BSI and ISO committees and working groups operate.

  • How standards are created, reviewed and updated.

  • What to do when you identify a problem with a standard.

  • How BGA members can influence future standards.

The session is free and provides a useful route into understanding how standards are created and maintained, as well as why they matter in commercial and technical settings.
