The BGA IMechE joint Student Prize 2021 winner is Samuel Williams from the Sheffield University for his MEng project:
"Development of a Composite Gear for the use in an Electric Racing Car."
The judging panel commented:
"A well-structured project which is very well presented in a clear and concise manner.
The introduction provided good context and justification for the work and the objectives were effectively defined and appropriate for the work.
Appropriate modelling methods were used but an improved gear analysis method using ISO 6336 would have been welcome for the steel gears, but this is only practical if you have access to appropriate software.
The decision making strategy was simple but appropriate and effective for this application.
A benefit that could be emphasised further in the evaluation of the design is the reduced noise and vibration from a composite bonded web design which will have significant benefits to all EV transmission designs."
Samuel has been invited to present his paper the the leading gear experts in the UK at GEARS 2022 in November 2022.
